Founded in 1974, Cooperativa Agrícola Cafetalera San Juan brings together small family farms across Caranaví, Bolivia, with a shared commitment to quality coffee and organic, chemical-free growing methods. Located in the lush, mountainous Yungas region, the cooperative’s farms are surrounded by rugged terrain, tropical forests, and rich biodiversity, creating a remarkable environment for growing Arabica coffee.
In recent years, renewed leadership from Felix Chambi Garcia, a specialty coffee expert with more than 16 years of experience, has helped strengthen the cooperative and improve the quality and diversity of its coffees. Felix represents a new generation of Bolivian coffee professionals working to realize the country's tremendous potential as a specialty coffee producer.
Each farmer carefully harvests only ripe coffee cherries, which are then processed on small farms using traditional methods before being assessed for quality. Felix oversees quality control and lot selection, ensuring that only coffees meeting the cooperative’s standards are prepared for export.
Growing coffee in Bolivia comes with its challenges. Small, remote farms and a demanding journey across the Andes make getting coffee to market no small feat. Each lot represents the dedication of the farmers and the cooperative's commitment to building a stronger future for Bolivian coffee.
